4D Science

Ages: 8 and upManufacturer: Spicebox Product Development

The 4D Science kit includes augmented reality goggles (smart phone and free app required for use) that bring the friendly Professor Maxwell to life right above the pages of the instruction manual/experiment book — demonstrating the steps of each experiment and explaining key concepts. Our groups of young testers were smitten with the quirky, fun character who readily engaged them. Although the app had its challenges, it did add a few layers of fun.

The 10-experiment kit includes: a fully-illustrated manual, hands-free augmented reality googles, food coloring, a mini beaker, measuring spoon, measuring cup, 2 washers, string, 2 balloons, rubber band, glue, paintbrush, volcano mold, filter paper, green felt-tipped pen, mirror, dropper, and baking soda. Additional common household items are required: salt, vinegar, and scissors. Some favorite experiments were the ever-popular erupting volcano, making sticky slime, making a rainbow, and changing the color of flowers via their vascular systems. Through the kit, our young testers were introduced to important scientific concepts such as chemical reactions, static, chromatography, and gases as well as the basics of the scientific method. The instruction manual includes safety rules, tips for parents, and easy-to-follow instructions for kids with age-appropriate explanations for how/why the experiments work.
