Back to the Land
On Back To The Land, the Hot Peas ‘n Butter musical duo of multi-instrumentalist and lead singer Danny Lapidus, and bassist and harmony vocalist Francisco Cotto are joined by some fine guest vocalists, in songs about the environment. The opening title track sets the upbeat tone of the album, and features the guest vocal talents of Laurie Berkner, Dan Zanes and Peter Yarrow. The Bob Schneider-penned “Listen to the Water” is given nice mandolin accompaniment for this tale of the animals that live by a river and the sounds they make. Afro-Caribbean rhythms, slide guitar and a Laurie Berkner vocal spice up “Big World Kid,” while the traditional spiritual “Come Go with Me to That Land” is given a lively New Orleans parade feel. “Firelight” is a beautiful, lyrical love song, supported by some poignant fiddle and guest duet vocalist Susan Lapidus. Highlights include the popular Nigerian greeting song “Funga Alafia,” featuring guest vocalist Marcelle Davis-Lashley, the bluegrass stomp of “Little Fox,” and the bi-lingual and highly rhythmic sing-a-long “Ven Conmigo Para Esta Tierra” (Come With Me For This Earth) featuring singer/percussionist Ler? Martinez Rold?n. “Come into My Kitchen” is fun and hunger-inducing, food naming song and the lively “Rainbow In Your Eyes” names colors. The album finishes with the classic Lorre Wyatt “Somos el Barco/We Are the Boat,” the melody of which was famously borrowed for the “We Are The World” project.
