Bill & Vick’s Picks: Second Chances & Surprise Endings

Ages: 7 and upProducer: Bill Wood - Storyteller

$15.00

In Second Chances & Surprise Endings, Bill Wood and Vicky Town’s fifth collaborative album for children, the stories address just that: second chances and surprise ending. Wood tells the autobiographical “Bowl of Strawberries” and offers his retelling of the Native American story, “The Legend of Rainbow Crow” where the most beautifully feathered bird, offers to make the arduous journey to ask the Great Sky Spirit for relief from a prolonged, cold winter. Although the Rainbow Crow is successfully rewarded by the Great Spirit with the gift of fire, she comes back changed forever. This oft repeated story symbolizes the value of selflessness and service, and Wood’s telling is captivating. Vicky tells two stories: “Hans and the Basilisk,” a traditional tale from Vienna, is about how Hans, an aspiring baker in the house of grumpy master baker Garhibl, longs for his employer’s daughter, the lovely, if not a little self-centered Apolonia. Though Garhibl is initially disapproving, Hans gets a second chance by vanquishing the serpent who haunts the town. Between stories, Wood and Town converse about the lessons to be found in each story, and find ways to naturally segue into the next tale. Town’s final tale, “The Storyteller,” is based on the traditional “The Storyteller and the Samurai,” and celebrates how a story is more powerful than a sword. The CD also provides a link to two additional stories children can listen to for free on-line. This recording delivers an enchanting introduction to the wonderful world of spoken stories and hopefully will encourage children to want to see these fine storytellers in a live setting.
