Building Blocks by Tim Kubart
You don’t have to be a kid to feel the joyful uplift in Tim Kubart’s latest. But, while his gorgeously crafted songs (written with his Bfast Studios team, Matt Puckett and Dominic Fallacaro) invite repeat listening for all ages, they are first and foremost for growing children—the result of heartfelt and savvy observations of childhood firsts, challenges met, triumphs, and everyday pleasures. Kubart, whose previous album, “Home,” won the Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album in 2016, sings about that first ride on a school bus (“Day One”), first pet (Ready for You”), the exciting bustle of a construction site (“It’s Going Up”), and a castle-building summer at the beach (“Sand + Imagination”). The dynamic “Jump Right In” is from the viewpoint of a kid ready to take his first plunge off a diving board. “Hold On” seamlessly and touchingly integrates the real-life viral video motivational speech given by a 4-year-old after he rode his bike sans training wheels; and “Oopsie-Do!” (the title of Kubart’s first children’s book) offers children a light-hearted way to ease their “upset” over a mistake. Kubart’s signature mix of child-celebrating soulfulness and fun puts him in the company of the best of the best children’s artists. Kubart’s other songwriting/composing credits include “Sesame Street” and, with Bfast Studios, Netflix Family and PBS Kids. He has hosted a Sprout Channel preschool TV series, co-hosts Highlights Magazine’s “Highlights Hangout” podcast (and he performs with Postmodern Jukebox as “Tambourine Guy”).
