Cantando y Jugando
Cantando y Jugando is a Spanish music CD meant to expose listeners not only to the Spanish language but also to traditional and authentic Puerto Rican music. Written and performed by a native Puerto Rican, Elba Llantin-Cruz’s songs are gentle and sweet. The lyrics are clear and pronounced in a way that can easily be repeated.
Most of the sings have ties to Puerto Rican culture and all have a theme of some sort. Three of the songs (“Brinca La Tablita,” “Tin Marin,” and “Uno Dos”) teach the child to count as high as nineteen in a soft and easy listening style. “El Coqui” is about the frog found in the rainforests of Puerto Rico. These little frogs are known for their melodic singing which Elba incorporates into the song.
Although most songs won’t be very familiar to someone who doesn’t have a Hispanic background, some songs will sound familiar. One of the songs (Mi escuelita) is to the tune of “La Cucaracha” and another song is to the tune of “Lullaby and Good Night,” a traditional American lullaby.
