A lot of courage, a little history, some gripping video and a story about overcoming obstacles are the elements that make for good segments on The Champion Within.
“Everyone is born with the heart of a champion. You have just to look within yourself to find it,” says Golf Channel TV personality and host Lauren Thompson. Thompson spends each half-hour show introducing segments about athletes who are influential, exceptional “champs,” in one way or another.
Whether they are surfers training for the 2020 Olympic games, a golfer battling an ailment, or an NFL player determined to give back for all the support he has received in his career, these “champions” seem to share some common traits: determination, resilience and heart. Women Olympic hockey players talk about the “heartbreak” of loss and the “greatest honor for our team” to bring home gold. It’s hard not to be moved by the stories.
Compelling narratives make viewers care about the people featured, and the incredible feats that can be accomplished and obstacles that can be overcome show what makes a true “champion” – on and off the playing field.
