While some components here skew younger, older teens and adults are the best audience for the written and visual content found in this exceptional “lit/art” magazine, a compendium of original sci-fi and fantasy, speculative fiction, slice-of-life ruminations, graphic novels, poetry, and diverse perspectives from established and emerging authors, artists and poets. A sampling: a girl escapes her abusive father by becoming fire; the tale of The Little Mermaid is given a hauntingly somber twist; a captive bird leads a woman to metamorphosis and freedom. Among the magazine’s regular features are informative and thought-provoking interviews with authors and artists, reader polls and links to other websites; Cicada’s online writing lab, Slam, offers teen readers a nurturing environment for the exploration of their own creative efforts. (Note to parents: many pieces feature mature language and themes.)
