Creative Cosmetics Lab
The Creative Cosmetics Lab from Thames & Kosmos is a cosmetics craft kit with a science foundation. In the process of creating scented soaps, salt scrubs, bath fizzies, scented oils, shower jellies and doughs, and lip rubs, kids do experiments to learn about skin types, pH, and emulsions, observe the behaviors of different acids and bases, and study what goes on under the surface of the skin. The kit provides a generous range of supplies for all the basic cosmetics, including the raw materials as well as test tubes and beakers, not to mention soap molds and presentation jars, but it also encourages the young chemists to be creative in seeking out scents and colors in the natural world: our own tests used oranges, violets, and lavender just to start.
For some of the chemistry experiments additional supplies are required; most of these are household items (salt, sugar, cooking oils, dishwashing liquid) but a few may take some more effort to locate (amber glass jars). The manual is interesting to read, especially for kids who really want to understand the chemistry, but those who wish to leap straight into projects will have no problem doing so.
