Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Ages: 2 - 4Producer: The Fred Rogers Company Rating: TV Y - All Children

Half a century after Mister Rogers began helping young TV viewers navigate their feelings, Fred Rogers Productions continues its namesake’s mission with appropriately paced animated program for preschoolers.

Here, Little Daniel (the son of Daniel Striped Tiger from the Neighborhood of Make Believe) navigates experiences and emotions common to young children.  In Daniel Visits the Dentist, the kindly dentist explains the process in reassuring terms, from the tools she’ll use to clean his teeth to how he can efficiently brush his own teeth at home.  In Daniel’s First Haircut, Daniel learns that haircuts don’t hurt, and he notes the benefits of talking through the steps of a new process before it begins to reduce worries.  Similar supportive messages are shared in other stories built around babysitting, when a parent travels for work, carving out special time to spend with each parent. . . even the importance of trying to go potty before leaving the house!

Much like the pioneering work of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood teases out the emotions attached to daily as well as special events, helping young children build important social and emotional skills. Life lessons are expressed through gently paced songs with uplifting lyrics, and a liberal dose of make-believe play.  Grandparents, parents, and kids can watch this winning program together and revel in the messages, and memories, inspired by Fred Rogers, a true legend in children’s programming and development.
