Daniel Tiger’s Storybooks

Ages: 2 and upDeveloper: The Fred Rogers Company

Daniel Tiger’s Storybooks features six interactive ebooks in English and Spanish: Big Brother Daniel, Daniel Shares his Tigertastic Car, Daniel and His Friends, Daniel’s Babysitter, Neighborhood Clean Up, and Something Special for Dad. Each story is available in two modes: one in which Daniel Tiger narrates the story and one in which children and/or parents read it. In narration mode, each word is highlighted as it is read, which helps children make the important connection between the written and spoken word. Each story also includes familiar songs from the show and mini-games. The stories themselves all focus on socio-emotional skills. In Daniel Tiger Shares his Tigertastic Car, children explore the challenge of sharing special items; in Big Brother Daniel, children see the emotional ups and downs of becoming a big brother/sister as well as how they can help. And, in Neighborhood Clean Up, children learn about their role in helping to care for their environments.

At the bottom of most pages, there are discussion questions for adults to pose. Children might be asked to identify characters’ feelings based on their words and facial expressions, to talk about why characters feel the way they do, and to recall situations in which they have felt similarly. This process of engaging with the story and talking about emotions helps children develop and hone empathy, a critical socio-emotional skill. The stories are a lovely way to start this important learning process and to open dialogues about children’s feelings.
