Epic! is an appropriate name for an app that features (as of this review) over 25,000 ebooks, audiobooks, and 2,500 videos. This virtual library features content for children aged twelve years and under –both narrated titles and titles for children to read independently – all nicely categorized by age and topic.
The narrated books are read slowly and clearly and the individual words are highlighted as they are read. This allows children to follow along and to make associations between the written word, spoken word, and the image on the page. These connections are critical pre- and early-reading skills. Other books are for children to read to themselves or to others. Children progress through these titles independently and at their own pace. Both type of book includes thought questions to keep children engaged in the material and to encourage thought about the content. Other attractive features include educational/entertaining videos on a broad range of topics, drawing books, and quizzes.
Content ranges from non-fictional material (e.g., volcanos, bull sharks, do-it-yourself science activities, and biographies) to fictional material featuring popular characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, Big Nate, Woodstock, and Clifford. There are even traditional fairy tales such as Stone Soup.
The subscription-based app offers a free one-month trial with users charged $7.99 per month thereafter. Although that might seem high at first, considering the app accommodates up to four reader profiles, and unlimited access to the vast library, that’s quite reasonable. Oh, and the Epic! App is free for Elementary School Teachers and Librarians.
