Get Your Summertime On
New Jersey native Chris Pedersen spent most of his boyhood outdoors, building forts, climbing trees and exploring; consequently, he sounds more Nashville than Newark. On this, his debut album, he collaborated with renowned studio musician, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Ryan Tilby. It’s Country music for kids, with all the attendant guitars, banjos, mandolins and dobros. The album’s opener “It Was The Summer,” followed by the pastoral, banjo trilling “Tree By A Rolling River,” conjure up welcomed images of glorious summer days. Pedersen continues this pattern, alternating between more upbeat, radio friendly rockers, such as “Vacation,” “Welcome To The Park,” and “First Campout,” with more acoustic, bluegrass orientated fare, such as “BBQ,” and the CD’s title track. Pedersen is at his most interesting when he travels into more diversified territory, as in the lazy, acoustic blues of “I Don’t Wanna,” and “Lemonade,” which features funky wah-wah guitar, acoustic dobro, dexterous mandolin, and particularly witty lyrics. Pedersen’s strong friendly voice, devoid of the usually commercial Country conventions, along with good songwriting and skilled musicianship, provides parents and kids a welcome addition in the often-underserved category of Country music for children.
