Ginalina – It Takes a Village
“Welcome to the Neighborhood,” the first track on this album is aptly titled, introducing a tuneful musical neighborhood where Canadian singer-songwriter Ginalina, with unforced sweetness, welcomes young listeners to sing along and dance along to her country-folk rhythms and expressive lyrics. Highlights among the child-affirming songs: “Everything Changes (Everything Grows),” letting children know that along with physical changes, their “imagination, determination,” and life stories are among the things that grow along with them. “Little Dragon, I Love You,” is a child’s tribute to a favorite toy that might be “tucked inside my wooden drawer” now, but is lovingly remembered for endless times of companionship and play. “The Life Cycle (Hop, Hop, Hop),” a tadpole-to-frog delight, leads into another infectious life cycle song, “Apple Apple Seed,” sung with children in English, French, and Chinese. “Goodnight Lullaby,” from a parents’ point of view, brings the album to a tender close.
