Ages: 4 - 8Publisher: Candlewick Press Author/Illustrator: Pete Oswald

A father and child go hiking on a woodsy mountain trail in this warm visual story celebrating family and appreciation for nature. Told entirely in resonant illustrations (but for a few hand-lettered sound effects) by author/artist Pete Oswald (Mingo the Flamingo), the pair’s adventure begins when Dad wakes up his offspring in the early morning. The sky is still streaky-pink with the sunrise as they load their backpacks in Dad’s jeep and drive through town and up into the mountains to a hiking trail. Over the course of their day, until the drive home, dinner, and a cozy look through the family photo album, there are animals to see, pictures to take, a patch of snow for a snowball fight, a stream to cross, and at the summit, the soulful reason for the trip. The closeness between parent and child and their shared appreciation for nature shines through every page.
