I Am Peace
Author Susan Verde, a children’s yoga instructor and a former elementary school teacher, joins noted illustrator Peter H. Reynolds in this inclusive, reassuring introduction to the practice of mindfulness as a tool for relaxation and alleviating anxiety. As the book progresses, a child deals with anxious, rushing thoughts by taking a breath, tuning into the here and now, watching “my worries gently pop and disappear,” “sharing kindness,” connecting with nature, and becoming aware of the world through all five senses. (The child, clad in pants, turtleneck top and a cap decorated with peace symbols, could be a boy or a girl; Reynolds leaves it up to the reader to choose.) The delicate lines and bright colors of Reynolds’ illustrations—rendered in ink, gouache, watercolor and tea—lend a quiet charm. The book ends with a guided meditation for all ages.
