If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a ? book series has charmed children since the first title was published in 1985. Here, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, is a new series from Amazon Studios based on Mouse and his friends, and their many cause-and-effect adventures.
Mouse, Pig, Moose, Dog, and Cat, along with a posse of human and talking-animals pals, certainly know how to make their own fun. Each episode includes two separate stories, usually incorporating a similar prop to drive the plots. These stories are short but efficient in passing along lessons about friendship, ingenuity, and finding fun in learning wherever you go. The “fun” begins by giving one of the characters an ordinary object and the storyline evolves thanks to the ripple-effect of their imagination and ingenuity. For example, a sock would make an efficient sleeping bag so Mouse invites his friends to a campout. A stick becomes the main prop in a new sport called Hoopla, resulting in a rousing neighborhood game. These stories are more than just entertaining; they present endless opportunities for parents and grandparents to continue the creative and critical thinking in real life by asking their little ones, “If I give you a _____, what else could you do with it?”
Singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb provides music for the series’ soundtrack and it’s done in a lilting and joyful style that perfectly supports the vivid art direction, following the style of Felicia Bond’s original book illustrations.
