Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the game board … Ravensburger delivers a strategy-based game based on the now classic Steven Spielberg movie, JAWS.
This is not a game for young players. A clear example of “know your child;” older teens and adults with reasonable judgement skills (and a strong stomach), particularly those who already know the movie, are the intended audience.
In two “acts,” one player controls the shark and one to three players control the three crew characters, Brody, Quint, and Hooper. The crew seek to narrow down the shark’s movements on the game board, in the first act attaching barrels to the shark if possible and in the second using firearms and other gear to wound the shark. The shark attempts to eat as many swimmers as possible on Amity Island beaches in the first act and to destroy either the eight parts of the boat or all three crew members in the second act. The rules are extremely complex and play requires many props, including game pieces, boat movers, boat pieces, barrels, targets, swimmers, signs, and several decks of cards, so players will need to keep the manual on hand more or less indefinitely. The rules are occasionally vague — for example, if the shark is spotted and the shark piece put on the board, does the shark have to stay on the board and show its movements, or is it removed at the start of the next round? That said, the strategies required in either locating the shark or evading capture make for a compelling and competitive game.
