Letters from Bear
There is a poetic, dreamlike quality to this lovely book about a bear foregoing hibernation to go in search of his best friend, Bird, who has flown south for the winter. His animal friends send him off with small mementos to comfort him, and during his journey, Bear writes daily letters to Bird that are delivered by the wind, telling about being rescued from a fisherman’s net by a mermaid, finding shelter from a battlefield inside a hollow tree, and among other strange and wonderful adventures, attending a costume party to celebrate a squirrel’s 100th birthday. The evocative illustrations of flora and fauna match the book’s quietly fantastical tone, and the surprise ending is just right. Written by frequent collaborators children’s author Gauthier David and artist Marie Caudry, whose paintings “about a globe-trotting bear” inspired the book.
