Look Closer

Ages: 3 and upProducer: m?mandp?p

Husband and wife Bobby Mathews and Virginia Ralph, the duo known as m?mandp?p, return with another exuberant album informed by the tenets of child development, a strong sense of fun, and clever instrumental and vocal stylings. “I Count on You” observes friendship with a vaudeville, ukulele bounce; “I Really Love to Color and Draw” (rock ‘n roll guitar and drums) frames the message that quiet creative times can help make an upset kid feel better; the title track is a sweet delight, encouraging us all to “look closer” at the world’s small wonders and the people in our lives to appreciate “the magic that you see.” The off-beat last track, “I’ll Help You Count Sheep,” sung ever so s-l-o-w-l-y, as if by an exhausted parent trying to lull a wide-awake child to sleep, isn’t exactly soothing, though its lugubrious, near-hypnotic quality may well elicit jaw-cracking yawns.
