Madeline Finn and the Shelter Dog
Madeline Finn may be little but she has a big heart. When Bonnie, the librarian’s dog, has puppies, Madeline is allowed to adopt one whom she names “Star.” After discovering that Star’s mother Bonnie was adopted from a shelter, Madeline visits her first animal shelter and becomes concerned the animals, especially a small dog named Mr. Chips, may be sad.
Having been told by Mrs. Dimple, the librarian, that love is the most important element in caring for Star, Madeline worries that Mr. Chips and the other shelter animals feel unloved and she decides to do something about it. The story builds tension when one of her schemes appears to fail. The cheerfully stylized illustrations delightfully depict our soft-hearted heroine and the dogs she loves.
