Math Bakery: Multiply and Divide is the latest addition to the Math Bakery Series. This app for children aged six through eight years, is set in a bakery where players learn and hone basic math skills using cookies as virtual manipulatives.
The app features narrated demonstrations with easy-to-follow steps and attractive visuals. For example, children are introduced to the concept of arrays and shown how to physically manipulate the numbers (i.e., the cookies) to solve problems. In this manner, children visually see that 3×4 is the same as 4×3; in other words, the commutative property of multiplication. Division is taught in a similar way, by children “physically” dividing the cookies up into arrays. Finally, the dual mode allows players to create math problems for each other to solve.
The muted color palette is pleasing, the illustrations and narration are charming and the overall pacing is appropriate, and anything but frenetic. Additional features include three available profile accounts, onscreen help button, and the absence of third-party advertisements and in-app purchases.
