Cats may sleep upwards of 18 hours a day, but when they’re awake, they can enter that race-around the house, supernova phase (often in the wee hours, as many cat “parents” can attest). In rhyming text, Kathi Appelt (author of The Underneath, a Newbery Honor Book) captures that energy in this charming picture book about Max, a blue, tiger-striped indoor cat, as he bounces and pounces through his day. (“He’s full of gusto, full of steam./He charges up the window screen.”) Max, the mighty hunter, stalks his catnip mouse, the socks in the laundry basket, shoelaces attached to unsuspecting feet, and the unconcerned residents of a fish bowl (with fur-soaked results). The book’s dynamic graphic design, use of Brush Up font, with its hand-painted look; and the delightfully kinetic acrylic, charcoal, and digital art by first-time children’s book illustrator Penelope Dullaghan, humorously capture this rambunctious feline in action.
