Mimi Bessette: Lullabies of Broadway, Act II
Broadway actress and soprano Mimi Bessette delivers her second collection of classic showtunes for children. The song selection, backed by either solo piano or light orchestration, is first rate, including those from more contemporary musicals such as The Secret Garden, Bright Star, Barnum, Wonderland and the title song from Beauty and the Beast, as well as classics from Annie Get Your Gun, Pippin and Guys and Dolls. There is even a sweet rendition of “The Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie, and a memorable version of “Hushabye Mountain” from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Bissette’s take on the melodic and lovely “Clusters of Crocus” paired with “Come to My Garden” (The Secret Garden) is particularly effective, and her cello backed “No One is Alone” (Into the Woods) is magical. Though billed as a lullaby album, one can’t help thinking that due to the memorable nature of the songs, children may stay awake singing along, rather than getting ready for bed. Either way, a lovely album to wind down with, especially if you adore show music.
