Muslim Girls Rise
Dreamscape Media presents Muslim Girls Rise, a compilation of inspiring animated stories about modern-day Muslim women excelling in everything from fashion to sports to science and government. It is based on a non-fiction picture book of the same name, and animated in a subtle and beautiful way that retains the charm of the book. Text was written by Saira Mir, a Muslim physician and author, who (according to jacket copy) wrote it when she couldn’t find books “to help her daughter find feminist role models who share her heritage.”
This DVD has a runtime of 27 minutes and it includes 19 short biographies of Muslim women who overcame challenges, stereotypes, and difficulties to grow up (and rise up) and achieve their dreams. Each sequence begins with an inspirational quote from that woman and is followed by a brief summary of her life’s journey and philosophies. The stories don’t shy away from difficult topics – for example, prejudice – but they are told in a way this is easy for young children to grasp and appreciate.
Muslim Girls Rise is a moving collection of stories that parents, educators, and faith community leaders from many religions can share with children. The exceptional stand-alone stories provide the flexibility to show this program in its entirety or to screen excerpts as they may relate to topical issues, educational content, and civic literacy.
