Mussila Music School
Mussila Music School teaches basic musical skills in a fun way. Designed for 6 – 10 year-olds, it helps kids learn the fundamentals of pitch, rhythm, reading music, and even music theory. Mussila makes music theory fun by turning music into games. The activities are engaging as well as useful, and builds on skills well. New content is added monthly.
Each mini-course breaks down a specific musical concept into small, easily repeated sections, and through a series of call-and-response exercises, helps the player practice this concept. Learning begins with demonstrating notes on a keyboard and musical staff, and gets users playing (pun intended) right away.
Mussila is very intuitive and forgiving, so rather than getting frustrated by tiny mistakes, kids will be encouraged to try again with no penalties. This, more than anything else, will help keep kids interested enough to keep going – and they’ll learn more than you’d think, very quickly!
There’s a DJ activity, where kids can play around with sounds and effects, and a Guitar Hero-style game that helps build understanding of musical flow, by tilting your device to fly, you can stay on track with the melody – as long as you avoid obstacles! From this musician’s viewpoint, there are a few areas where the user interface could be clearer, and the sequence of music skills could be built up from foundations in a little more traditional way. Overall, though, Mussila Music School has exceptional value and well worth a trial for any budding musician.
