Novel Effect – Making Storytime Magic
Compatible with iPhones and iPads running iOS 8 or later, the Novel Effect app adds layers of music, sound effects, and hints of character’s voices as favorite books are read aloud.
Reader/listeners ages 12 and under can select from 100 free soundscapes (as of this writing) for books owned or borrowed from the library. The soundscapes can also be applied to eBooks purchased on Amazon for your device’s eReader. There are a handful of free eBooks available too, not as strong an experience as the others.
Soundscapes have been created for readily available favorites such as Where the Wild Things Are, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Cat in the Hat, Madeline, and The Day the Crayons Quit. The library is vast and new titles are added weekly. The real time original music and effects are fun and fitting, depicting emotions and environments throughout the story. And the voices recognition technology that triggers them is a bit uncanny.
From our experience, the readers will improve their read aloud skills and the read-to will become more persistent in their requests. And that’s a happy ending.
