In a day and age where many children and youth are getting their “news” from social media such as Facebook and Twitter, it is refreshing to see a more reliable, but still age-appropriate alternative. The OWLconnected is a companion website to print and e-magazine of the same name (no subscription to the magazine is required for website access). The website, which is designed for children aged 9 through 13 years, features articles and videos on a wide range of topics.
Children might read about the California wildfires and pollution in Delhi in the World section, Tesla’s new electric truck in the Science and Technology section, or hurricane season and new orangutan species in the Planet section. And, in addition to these more serious topics, users can read movie and book reviews in the Entertainment section, learn about optical illusions in the Weird Zone, or watch a diverse collection of informative videos such as the Week in 60 (seconds).
The articles themselves are written in challenging, but age-appropriate language and feature a variety of pictures and diagrams to increase interest and enhance understanding. And, OWLconnected gives readers the opportunity to rate and comment on each of its articles and videos, granting a sense of ownership to the readers. This is a solid free resource to introduce children to the importance of being informed about the world around them in a safe and reliable way.
