Peg + Cat
Peg + Cat, another preschool treasure from The Fred Rogers Company and 9 Story Media, will undoubtedly sweep young viewers into Peg’s joyous world as she and her best feline friend Cat tackle problems with good humor and sharp thinking.
Each episode includes two separate storylines tightly focused on a mathematics concept. In “The Perfect Ten Problem,” Peg and Cat judge a singing competition and determine different ways to add numbers to get to ten. In “The Romeo and Juliet Problem,” romantic Romeo can only reach Juliet’s balcony using a series of horizontal and vertical lines. In other episodes, Peg uses fractions to ensure patrons at a pizza parlor are happy with their orders; makes a bar graph to compare data when Cat’s acting odd; and even ponders the concept of “infinity.” The neighborhood is populated by animals and humans who often make the problems worse, not better. But with the help of Cat, and some tuneful inspiration from her ukulele, Peg works through the problems using the kind of higher-order thinking skills kids need to succeed in the 21st century.
The spectacular art direction of this program ensures viewers aren’t just learning mathematics; they’re celebrating it! Familiar patterns and symbols are scattered throughout the graph paper landscape, and the score, songs, and sound effects keep the tone inviting and invigorating.
Be sure to schedule viewing time for this series. Peg + Cat makes for a perfect friendship of creative and critical thinking.
