Peg + Cat

Ages: 3 - 5Producer: The Fred Rogers Company Rating: TV Y - All Children

Joyous little Peg uses math to explain the world’s patterns, its problems, and its surprises.  Each episode includes two separate stories featuring Peg and her talking pet, a comical creature named Cat, as they predict, analyze, experiment, and compute their way to a problem’s happy ending.  Plots are fanciful, scripts are clever, the music is tuneful, and the art direction – filled with symbols of mathematics and geometry – is among the most creative you’ll ever see on a children’s program.

In The Polka Dot Planet Problem, Peg and Cat meet a cheerful alien named Dot. She communicates using American Sign Language, and together they find parts and create a diagram to fix Peg’s spaceship. Afterwards, they celebrate their success with a sweet song about communicating in different ways.

In The Mardi Gras Problem, Peg and Cat attend Mardi Gras with the late great legendary singer Billie Holiday, and once again they rely on diagrams when the wheels come off the parade float.

And, in the series’ first full length movie, Peg + Cat Save the World, the gang visits Washington, D.C., and, at the request of the President of the United States (voiced by actress Sandra Oh), Peg applies her math skills to solve the mystery of strange signals coming from outer space.

Peg + Cat builds higher-order thinking skills in a way that sweeps kids up in the excitement of discovery and the satisfaction of findings solutions.  No need for math-phobia here.  Peg is the perfect heroine to make math a thrilling mission.
