Pinkalicious & Peterrific

Ages: 3 - 5Producer: WGBH Educational FoundationRating: TV Y - All Children

This animated half-hour program, airing on PBS Kids, encourages preschoolers to explore the creative arts by inhabiting the world of Pinkalicious Pinkerton. . . and when it comes to “seeing the world through rose-colored glasses,” Pinkalicious takes the cake!

Each episode includes two separate stories along with live-action shorts, and it’s all peppered with simple-yet-tuneful songs.  With younger brother Peter in tow, these cheerful siblings take an artful approach to life’s daily adventures. They use crafting, imaginative play, or invention to solve problems and create “masterpieces”; and the caring adults around them offer insights about real-life artists, art movements, and art instruction.

In Drawing Noses, Pinkalicious learns a technique to draw a distinctive facial feature.  In Opera-matic, Pinkalicious’s mom invents a microphone-like device that turns the singers’ voices into operatic masters, teaching the kids about expressive performance techniques. In Sidewalk Art, chalk doodles evolve into an illustrated storytelling session with friends from the neighborhood.  The well-produced live-action sequence in that episode also profiles an artist who takes kids on a tour of a neighborhood featuring her whimsical chalk designs as she demonstrates the steps of her creative process.

Pinkalicious & Peterrific is a sweet little confection, all wrapped up in pink packaging.  In this world, garden gnomes talk and shooting stars plop down from the night sky, and those are just the kind of imaginative touches that can help little viewers be inspired by their own environment and embrace and indulge their artistic tendencies.
