PlayKids is a series of educational apps featuring a vast amount of content for children through age six. There are games, activities, and videos that cover academic and emotional learning skills. There are cartoons a plenty and items that focus on traditional academic topics: ebooks, letter tracing, flash cards, science experiments. But, there are also more creative activities such as coloring pages, a free-drawing area, and instructional videos on how to create popular cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Lightning McQueen. And, there are even videos and stories that concentrate on emotional and social learning; for example, there are videos about feelings and how to handle them, bullying, empathy and more. The topics covered in the app are as vast as the content itself.
And, despite the large amount of content, the app does not feel unwieldly or overwhelming. The dashboard is simple and intuitive, and navigation is straightforward. Even young children can be independent in their use of the app. The app has a locked Parents’ Area to create/edit child profiles, adjust parental controls (e.g., what shows the users can watch), turn wi-fi access on/off, impose time controls, and even switch languages.
Parents and children can explore the app for a free 14-day trial period, but after that, there is a $7.99/month subscription fee, which although the amount of content is extensive, may be high for many budgets. However, overall, the app series is an entertaining and engaging series of videos, games and activities that introduce a wide variety of cognitive, emotional, and social skills.
