Ranger Rick Cub
The bi-monthly Ranger Rick Cub magazine is a captivating first look at animals for children ages 1 – 4. The rhythm and pacing of the content are perfectly pitched.
Created for lap-readers and caregivers to browse together, each issue opens with an introduction to the young animal featured on the cover. Grownups read aloud straight forward facts, “Ruthy (the rabbit) has long ears and a wiggly nose” or a jaunting rhyme, “A treefrog’s toes are sticky/to help it get a grip. When it climbs up and down/ it doesn’t ever slip.” Starred prompts and tips encourage learning.
The quality color photographs beckon and the illustrations represent a seasonal real-world scene of animals, people and settings&mdask;Oceanside for August, Fireflies for the June/July issue and so on. The age appropriate activities are simple, clear and effective and the observation-prompted questions and challenges are charming: Blue footed boobies can dance; a baby duckling can swim; a penguin can hop. Can you?
