Sesame Street for Military Families
Deployment is hard for the entire family, so it is essential that military families have access to resources to address their experiences. Sesame Street for Military Families is a free website that provides such resources. There is material geared towards children and adults alike. Children have access to videos and stories as well as PDFs such as Bravery Badges, cards, coloring pages, and new friend coupons. There is even an Art Maker, Music Maker, and Mood Monster– each of which is geared towards teaching children how to identify their feelings and how to cope with them.
Additionally, there are tips and articles on topics such as celebrating birthdays when a parent is deployed, helping ease the stress of relocation, and talking to children about injury, death, and grief. The website also includes a wide variety of helpful links to resources on PTSD, TBI, returning home after service and so forth. The material on the website not only eases some of the emotional and social stress on children of military families, but it also normalizes their experience. So, they don’t feel quite so alone even when moving to new areas. The website can also introduce non-military families to the kinds of struggles and challenges their friends and families may experience.
