Sparkle & Shine
Jessie Farrell is a Canadian singer-songwriter who stars in the CBC Kids TV show Jessie & The Gumboot Kids, a series of music videos for children and their families. Here, songwriter/singer/performer/producer Farrell’s Sparkle & Shine features 14 original bluegrass and country flavored songs, backed by an excellent set of musicians, including some truly stellar lap steel guitar playing.
The album opens with the banjo driven good morning song “Pan for Gold,” followed by the fiddle fueled story of underground creatures “Can You Dig It,” while “Come On Shine” encourages children to express a full range of emotions. Elsewhere, “Ladybug” is a lovely ode to the popular insect set to a beautiful melody; “Dinosaurs” and fossils are celebrated, and “To The Top” is a Country Swing song that wonderfully proclaims ‘I never met a tree I didn’t like.’ “Como Se Llama” is a standout and “Shapes and Colours” of the seaside are explored in a song of the same name. Nature’s bounty is celebrated in Farrell’s exquisite, fresh Country tribute to a flower in “La-La-Lavender,” the buttery bluegrass of “Corn on the Cob,” and the woodpecker, counting song “Noisy Neighbour.” She turns her eye to the sky for the joyous “Rainbow,” and the slow burning rocker about lightning titled “It’s Electrical.” The album closes with the captivating celestial celebration of individuality of “One of a Kind.”
