Spin: The Rumpelstiltskin Musical
British actor Jim Dale, the award-winning stage and screen veteran who narrated all of the Harry Potter audiobooks, memorably voicing every character, does a bang-up job as narrator of this Broadway-style theatrical fairy tale adaptation by Neil Fishman and Harvey Edelman. Performed by a fine cast of professional stage actors and filled with comical contemporary references and catchy songs, it is set in an impoverished kingdom, ruled by a cowed young king who avoids his stepsisters’ bullying by building castles out of crackers. Flap-eared little Rumpelstiltskin sets the plot rolling by informing the king of the miller’s claim that his daughter, Jane, can spin straw into gold. The tuneful romp continues along familiar lines (albeit with too-expedient changes of heart on the parts of the king and stepsisters) until Rumpelstiltskin’s scheme to take Jane’s first-born is thwarted and a happily-ever ending is given to all.
