StoryBox Magazine

Ages: 3 - 7Publisher: Bayard Presse Subscription Price: $ 75 for One Year / 10 issues

StoryBox, from Bayard Presse, is a 52-page, family magazine, designed for adults to share the joy of reading with the children in their lives. Each issue starts with a 20 to 22-page story, aka “Storytime,” followed by a “Discovery” science section with two articles, containing succinct explanations about everything from blue whales, dinosaurs and pumas, to how bees make honey, why we dream, and how do teeth grow. The “Adventures” section has four regular features with reoccurring characters, such as the always optimistic and inquisitive Jolly Family, and the comic book style adventures of SamSam (the smallest of the big heroes). The illustrations and writing for Little Brown Bear may remind some readers of the classic Corduroy series; a more innocent time of children’s books. Immediately following the sweet bear stories, is the wordless comic strip styled Polo (a beagle), meant for children to tell the story in their own words.

A small, easy to use, game section concludes each issue. The full color magazine is printed on slick, durable paper, suitable for plenty of repeat visits. The writing is generally light-hearted, whimsical and fun, with illustrations often presented in an almost old-fashioned style. Yet, there are 21st century options for print and/or audio subscriptions which include a read aloud function.

A children’s story magazine that establishes a regular rhythm of reading, and spending quality, one-on-one time with the adults in their lives will always have a happy ending.
