The Hummingbird Sings and Dances: Latin American Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes
Another eye-catching “musical picture book” from The Secret Mountain, the Canada-based press specializing in a marriage of diverse music, art, and storytelling. Here, artist Mariana Ruiz Johnson, inspired by Latin American folk art, colorfully illustrates her selection of single verses of children’s songs and nursery rhymes from Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, and many other countries with full-page depictions of flora, fauna, and people. (And a trio of jaunty skeletons for the song “Los esqueletos.”) The verses are written in Spanish and English; the book ends with an illustrated map showing the location of the countries featured, as well as the full verses of each selection in both languages. The songs on the accompanying CD are performed by the veteran children’s artists of Mexico’s Grupo C?ntaro. (A code for a digital download is included.)
