The NEW BIG Plane Trip

Ages: 3 - 8Producer: Little Mammoth Media

The New Big Plane Trip is a documentary-style production that takes young viewers on a 4,700 mile flight from Atlanta, Georgia, to London, England.

A youthful female narrator begins with airport locations passengers usually see, but then takes viewers on a tour of an airplane maintenance facility; explains flight attendant training; visits the test kitchen for in-flight food prep; and explores the underground matrix of machinery that moves the luggage. Throughout the program, brief interview clips feature everyone from baggage handlers to ticket agents, flight attendants, pilots, and even the meteorologists who plot flight plans. Kid-friendly graphics explain stats about airplanes, particularly the Boeing 767-300 featured in this program, and there’s even a concise explanation of the science of flight. The program concludes with an uplifting montage over credits as Delta employees talk about following their dreams and encourage kids to do the same. A short bonus feature offers a guided excursion through London, geared towards children.

For kids who’ve never flown before, this 44-minute DVD offers information about what to expect. For young frequent fliers, The New Big Plane Trip spotlights the teams of people who populate the industry and ensure a smooth flight.

While not flashy in its production, it’s certainly kid-friendly and information-rich making it a good choice for leisurely viewing or in an elementary school as kids explore how our world works.
