Think Outside Boxes
The Think Outside subscription boxes encourage outdoor exploration, building skills and resourcefulness via individual, family and group activities. Each month’s themed kit includes a 20+ page well written and illustrated guide, water resistant resource cards, a family challenge, and 3-5 items of related outdoor “gear.” We put the Initiation Box (Adventure Awaits You), the Wildlife Box (Did You See that?) and the Shelter Box (Feeling Sheltered?) through their paces.
Our testers, ages 5, 8 and 10 were as delighted as their adults to start exploring. Filled with practical and useful ideas, information, activities and tools, each kit stresses the importance of safety, being prepared, asking questions, planning ahead, and keeping a positive attitude when challenges strike.
Even the boxes themselves are thought-provoking and fun. The Initiation Box says, “Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” The Wildlife Box has a popsicle-stick riddle: “What’s a snake’s favorite subject? Hiss-tory” and the Shelter Box states “Camping Outside is really in-tents.” Our punsters had a field day.
To get started, there’s a challenge card for the child to give to an adult – a brilliant way to encourage child/adult interaction and enthusiasm. The contents are well thought out and presented. Rather than simply list what to pack, users learn how to pack. Not only does the shelter box instruct how to build a shelter, it talks about why it’s important. And the Wildlife box focusses on the techniques of animal tracking both as observation and safety.
Quality materials, age appropriate activities, practical skills and an overall theme of exploring and enjoying nature pack a lot of hands-on learning in a 16-ounce box.
