Vooks is a curated, virtual library filled with narrated and animated ebooks. The website features countless titles that were new to me and my family as well as many well-loved favorites such as Harold and the Purple Crayon, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and The Snowy Day. Children can browse titles and hover over their thumbnails to get a brief synopsis of each book and then take their pick. The narrators are well-chosen and the experience dressed up with music and sounds that make sense for the story. The words are highlighted as they are read to help children follow along and learn new words.
The books are skillfully animated, but not interactive. However, that lack of distraction is exactly what many children need (and often prefer) to be successful and to enjoy reading. It’s all about balance and knowing your child.
Vooks, available online or iOS, offers a free 7-day trial. The cost thereafter is $4.99/month or $49.99/a year. And BTW, if you haven’t read “Exclamation Mark!” (Amy Krouse Rosenthal/Tom Litchtenheld) now is the time.
