Why We Stay Home: Suzie Learns about Coronavirus
Timely, informative, and comforting, Why We Stay Home – Suzie Learns about Coronavirus features two young people of color discussing the importance of staying home during the pandemic. While not stated in the book, we know that Covid-19 has disproportionately affected communities of color.
Although sisters Millie and Suzie are delighted to be with Mommy and Daddy, it’s not because of a holiday. When wise “older” sister Millie asks Suzie if she knows why the family is staying at home together, the young girl confidently says, “Yes! It’s because of coronavirus.” Her follow up question doesn’t miss a beat: “but what is corona virus anyway?”
Sprightly illustrations by Harriet Rodis complement the clear age appropriate text of first-time authors and medical students Samantha Harris and Devon Scott. The collaborators explain what a virus is, that there are good and bad germs, the healthy habits we should practice – and the significance of checking in on friends and family who may be alone in quarantine.
The added bonus? Why We Stay Home is free to download. Let’s hope the Harris/Scott/Rodis team continues this formula to teach young people – in sickness and in health.
