Wings on My Feet
The Milwaukee-based folk duo of Dave Fox and Will Branch continues its successful tactic of combining traditional tunes, inspired covers and well-written original songs. Using standard bluegrass instrumentation of acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and washboard, the occasional accordion and even tuba helps to give the music some added color. The bulk of this latest recording draws on some very good, self-penned tunes, as in the uplifting opening title track, the hoedown ode to literacy “Reading is the Secret,” and the rumba driven song about a new baby sibling, “My Little Person.” Other originals include, the two-stepping “The Cowboy,” their rhythmically locomotive “The Longest Train,” and a banjo-driven tale of high sea adventures in “Arcadia.” Covers include a flat-picked rendition of The Carter Family classic “The Wabash Cannonball,” a lovely rendition of the Hawaiian “Wai Ola,” and an unlikely bluegrass reinterpretation of Prince’s evergreen “Starfish and Coffee.”
