Wonster Words is a series of games and activities to teach children ages five and under phonics, spelling, and vocabulary; the lessons are presented in five areas: Stories, Phonics, Math, Science, and Arts & Music.
The most engaging area within the app are the Stories in which children complete phonics activities to see short videos and to progress through the plot. The stories feature the amusing Wonster characters and range in topics from racing to birthday surprises. In each of the stories, children are presented with words spelled out in shadow and must drag the animated letters to their respective places. As each letter is touched, it says its name and sound. And, once the word is complete, the word is spoken, a short, related video is played, and the word is defined. This is all done in a light-hearted way through the Wonsters and is a great way to help children connect letter shapes, names, and sounds together, not to mention developing vocabulary. The Phonics portion of the app uses the same technique, but it teaches word families (e.g., AT, CH, AT, etc) in place of individual letters.
The Math, Science, and Arts & Music activities are all the same basic task just with slightly different execution and word groups. The Math section features three focuses: numbers, counting, and shapes. In Numbers, players drag numbers into the correct spaces on the prize wheel so they can spin and watch animated shorts. They learn the number shapes and names. In Counting, players must drag groups of toys to the right spots on the shelf and learn one-to-one correspondence as they count the toys. And, in shapes, they learn the names and see the properties of circles, squares, triangles, and polygons as they drag them into place to decorate an elephant’s blanket. The Science activities currently include similar puzzles: The Weather, Stegosaurus, Cats, and Dirt Bugs with Paleontologist and Space Shuttle coming soon. And, the Art & Music section exposes children to word groups about artists, percussion, classical music, and more.
The characters are cute, the animations are comical, and the games are simple and easy-to-learn, which sets children up for success. After a one-week free trial, subscriptions are $7.99/month and can be cancelled at any time.
