Zategy is a fast and fun game that will feel both familiar and fresh at the same time. Like the classic connect-four game, players compete to line up four tokens in a row. However, in Zategy, there can be up to four players in a game, and the colored tiles can be placed adjacent to any others, in any direction, on an effectively unlimited playing surface. Every player also gets one “block tile,” to be used once in a game for an emergency defense. And if these elements aren’t enough to make the game complex and competitive, there is a 3D version, in which players not only place tiles adjacent to one another but can even start building on top of other tiles.
Zategy requires one’s full attention; it’s easy to miss another player’s multi-directional setups. There are many opportunities for clever strategy, especially in the 3D version. And it is decidedly more fun with more players, as everyone colludes against anyone else with a perceived advantage. It is entirely possible to play to a draw, but usually someone slips up sooner or later, and then everyone will be eager to clear the tiles and try to even the score.
